CHAPTER FIFTEEN

Cormac

Cormac knew he was sending mixed signals, but he didn’t know how to stop doing that and still do the honourable thing and keep her out of his bed.

He wanted her in his arms. Had wanted to pull her down to the pine needles and kiss her all over. Strip off her clothes and lose himself and the future inside her. Discover her secrets and meet her demands with a hunger that had less to do with his own needs than the desire to fulfil hers.

Of course he wanted her upstairs in his bed moaning his name, wanted everything about her. After that last kiss, there was no doubt that she wanted it, too. This falling in love went both ways. There, he’d confirmed it—he’d fallen and so had she—and now it would be a hundred times harder to hold back.

He’d assumed she wasn’t as engaged as he was, but he’d been wrong. She wanted him. Cared about him. This was his fault. He should have left things like they’d been at the park. Strangers.

But he’d followed and found Gabi and now they both wanted the natural progression their feelings demanded. So why wasn’t he carrying all this to its normal conclusion, he thought as he followed her around the barn?

He knew why. He was terrified. For a laid-back Texan, he wasn’t used to love emotions. Not a lot of things scared him. But taking Gabriella Maria to bed and then walking away a week later scared the pants off him. Shook the loyalty he owed his family. How could he think about not going home? Shook his perception of himself that what he felt for Gabi could affect his plans when he owed Gramps and Jolene so much.

He’d go home. Of course he would. But not wanting to go wasn’t right.

‘Oh, it’s one of your spheres.’ Her voice jerked him out of his miserable introspection as they rounded the corner to his workshop. Her face lit up as she crouched down beside the latest project, then stood and walked around the large sphere, examining it from all angles.

His latest project was almost complete, and he needed to get it done. The one after that was for Gabi, though she didn’t know it. He’d leave it in her backyard on the morning he left.

Gabi’s sphere had horses galloping across the roof of the dome, stars, and a cowboy with a lasso, which had been really tricky. It would look good in her backyard, glowing at night with coals burning down, but he only had one side done.

She looked up at him with those beautiful kaleidoscope eyes, shifting from green to gold as they caught the beams of sunlight through the clear panels in the roof.

He soaked her in. Dang it. He’d been in love since that first day.

‘It’s amazing. You’re amazing. I love it.’

His mind started to reply, echoing her words, and he shut them down. ‘I have two more to make after this one. I’ll be doing long hours next week, so I probably won’t be able to see you until Wednesday, and it’ll be late.
